Wow, What a Week!

Looking back, I am reflecting on the joy of achievement, the goals Robert met and the joy we shared.

My youngest son, Robert, graduated on Thursday, June 7th

We celebrated at school, at a local restaurant and at home with friends!

At School, Robert was recognized with the Chesapeake District Civitan Award for outstanding vocational performance. Beth Creech, his first teacher at Phillips, surprised him by coming back to the ceremony. His long term therapist, Heather Kirby was present along with his Mentor, Clint from Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. His accomplishments were applauded by Lil St. Laurent, his counselor, Laura Byne, his current teacher, and Karen Steshko, his career advisor, along with countless administrators, educators, advocates, mentors and guides who were instrumental to his success. His sister, his Dad and I along with our dear family friend, Sylvi Donlon, were all there to capture the moment, applaud his efforts and celebrate his journey.

Later, we went to Mike’s American Grill. Robert sat next to his sister, Sandra, relished his accomplishments, ordered filet mignon and a special desert to top off the day. Meanwhile, my husband, John, and I reflected on our blessings and thanked God for our Good Fortune, our Friends and the Circle of Support that we enjoyed. As I gazed into their happy eyes, I knew that we were helped immensely, that we could never have done it alone and that I would be forever grateful to the Phillips staff and Fairfax County Public School System for making this day of celebration possible.

On Friday, we continued the celebration, opened our home to long term neighbors and friends who surrounded Robert with love and accolades. Robert was joined by the Donlons, the Newells, the Gores, the Barbaros, the Gleasons, the Evjens, Tom Tomlinson, and Tim Gleeson, Karen Lilley, Linda Paige, Julie Ray, Brittany, and Christopher.

Today, We are Celebrating Another Milestone…

The first Monday outside of school

A new chapter opens

We will describe in more detail on April 9th, but we wanted to give you an overall picture of what the program entails.

We plan to give Moms of Young Adults with Special Needs what we have needed most throughout the years:

Appreciation;
A Circle of Support;
Stress Reducing Activities; and
Resources for Refueling.

From personal experience, I know Mom feels especially vulnerable and isolated as her child with special needs approaches adulthood. As she watches her child approach graduation without clearly defined goals, she begins to panic. She watches in horror, as the supports she has used to structure her young adults day, fall away. Upon graduation, this Mom sees her child struggle to fill his days and this breaks her heart. This Mom feels as if she is traveling alone through a desert with the weight of her young adult firmly on her back and clenching tightly to her neck. This mom is thirsty for hope and support. She is stressed and tired. I have wandered this desert and I have found an oasis and I wish to share it with you.

Parents, Educators and Advocates, all seek to prepare our youth with special needs for self-sustaining jobs and independent living. This is complex undertaking and requires planning and collaboration. It is a daunting task and not a job that can be done in isolation. It is a job that requires initiative, persistence, concentrated effort, networking, and teamwork!
